Broadway favorite West Side Story is destined for the big screen again. The highly-anticipated West Side Story film is quickly approaching its new premiere date after being postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and along with the excitement is a new full-length trailer.
Starring Rachel Zegler as Maria and Ansel Elgort as Tony, West Side Story was filmed in New York and New Jersey. The trailer opens with Rachel singing “Tonight” from a city fire escape before showcasing some of the various settings from city streets to warehouses where we’re sure to see plenty of dancing, singing, and West Side drama.
The new adaptation still has an Old Hollywood feel, but what’s more notable is that the cast features Latinx actors in leading roles to properly represent the classic’s characters and the world that the musical represents. We’re excited to see this story brought to life with the authenticity and diversity it deserves!
West Side Story will make its way to theaters on December 10, 2021, just in time for the sixtieth anniversary of the 1961 film adaptation.
