SNEAKERELLA (Disney/Brendan Adam-Zwelling)

The Disney+ respin of Cinderella Sneakerella is coming to the streaming platform on May 13. Ahead of the film’s release, Disney+ shared a first look at the soundtrack with the song “Kicks” and its music video.

“Kicks” is performed by Chosen Jacobs who stars as El in the film. The opening scenes and music for the film, “Kicks” is a footwork-focused opening number that gives us major In The Heights vibes as it shows a daydream dance sequence where El shows off his shoes in his neighborhood.

Choreographed by Ebony Williams and Emilio Dosal, “Kicks” seems like the perfect inspiration for group hip hop routines. “Kicks” and Sneakerella are, of course, centered on the sneakerhead culture in New York City, but we could see this as the backdrop for all kinds of shoe-centered creations.

A twist on Cinderella, Sneakerella tells the story of El (Chosen Jacobs), an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens who works as a stock boy in the shoe store that once belonged to his late mother. El hides his artistic talent from his overburdened stepfather and two mean-spirited stepbrothers who constantly stomp on any opportunity that comes his way. When El meets Kira King (Lexi Underwood), the fiercely independent daughter of legendary basketball star and sneaker tycoon Darius King, sparks fly as the two bond over their mutual affinity for sneakers. With a little nudge from his best friend and a sprinkle of Fairy Godfather magic, El finds the courage to use his talent to pursue his dream of becoming a ‘legit’ sneaker designer in the industry.

Sneakerella also stars Lexi Underwood, Devyn Nekoda, Juan Chioran, Bryan Terrell Clark, Kolton Stewart, Robyn Alomar, Yvonne Senat-Jones, and Hayward Leach.

The “Sneakerella” digital original soundtrack will be released on May 13 alongside the movie’s streaming debut.
