Social distancing and quarantine have us all watching a lot more of our favorite performances through our phone screens with artists transitioning from stadium concerts to living room livestreams. At this point, we’re all familiar with the excitement of an Instagram Live session starting and just as your favorite song is picking up, the live stream starts to stutter and freeze. That’s exactly what happens in Selena Gomez’s new music video with Trevor Daniel for their song “Past Life.”

Instead of suffering through seconds (or more) of Instagram’s buffering wheel spinning us back to the livestream, though, the video takes us deeper into the stills of Selena and Trevor, and we’re not talking about pixels. As Selena and Trevor continue to sing in the background, the camera pans across gorgeous, mystical landscapes, like whirlpools in Trevor’s eyes and forests of pink trees on Selena’s cheeks.

It’s hard to collaborate right now, but Selena and Trevor know how to make captivating art at a distance. “Past Life” literally takes you to a whole new world just beneath the surface of our expectations (and we thought Zoom music videos were cool).
