There’s no closer friendship than a friendship between two dancers. They’re able to share their hopes, their dreams, laughter, and their love of dance. When that best friend is your sister, though, you share even more! You grow up together, you see each other’s highs and lows, you see them set goals and achieve them, and lift them up when they don’t. For the Shaw sisters, all of this rings true. Sure, like any siblings, they have their ups and downs, but at the end of the day, they continue to inspire and support one another in the journey of dance and of life.
Mastering their skills at West Coast School of the Arts, Lauren and Brooke Shaw both fell in love with dance right away. “I realized I loved to dance at my first dance class at [the age] of three,” Lauren shared. While they both love dance, Brooke leans more towards jazz and Lauren has a love of contemporary. “I just love the movement through my whole body [...] I feel free and relaxed when dancing it,” Lauren gushed.
While it may not be either’s absolute favorite, they both love ballet as well! They also find common ground in their love of shopping, fashion, traveling, and spending time with their family. They recently took a trip to Hawaii with their family where they ziplined, hiked, and caught some major sun rays. They both dream of one day going to Turks & Caicos (Us, too!).
The similarities don’t stop there; a lot of people tell them that they look alike. “We don’t!” Brooke argues. When they’re not traveling, shopping, or dancing, though, they choose to spend their free time a little differently. Brooke loves to do crafts and swim, while Lauren calls herself a total “foodie.” Lauren explains, “I eat all types of food, but Brooke is very picky.”
If you have siblings, you know it’s not always tutus and roses. They, like everyone else, have their typical sister arguments. “[We fight] about me annoying her... but I don’t!” Brooke says. Lauren, on the other hand, says, “We fight about who’s prettier! Hahaha!” But they’re able to get through these fights pretty quickly. Brooke makes it a point to only go into Lauren’s room for a reason, while Lauren says they get over the “who is prettier?” drama by “[agreeing] that I’m prettier... Just kidding!” Ha!
Growing up together, they’ve had a lot of great memories! “When we were Hawaii, and she got off the hammock, I fell flat on my face!” Brooke laughs. “When we were younger, we used to pretend that we were rockstars & hold our own lip syncing concerts on my bed for my family!” Lauren reminisces. Their love of travel and the spotlight started early, and we think it will only continue!
Despite their differences Brooke and Lauren are immensely inspired by one another. “Lauren is an amazing dancer and has worked so hard to get where she is!” Brooke says about her sister. “[Brooke] has such a great stage presence and con dence in what she’s doing,” Lauren said, “She puts so much energy and passion into her dancing!” We love that despite their differences, Lauren and Brooke consider each other role models and are able to chase their dreams side by side.
