Have you ever felt like maybe you don’t belong? Or that you stand out but not in a good way? Chances are that this has nothing to do with the way people actually see you and more to do with your own insecurities. Sometimes it can be hard to love your own greatness when there are so many other people around you also doing great things. All it can take, though, is a step back to see how awesome you are.
Hip hop dancer Mariah “Spirit” Perkins did just that.
When she was in the 7th grade, Mariah developed vitiligo. Vitiligo is a condition that causes a person's skin to lose its pigments in various patches all over their body. When she first developed vitiligo, Mariah was embarrassed of the changes in her skin and wore full-coverage foundation to hide her condition. Now, Mariah owns her conditions and recognizes that her differences do not take away from how awesome she is. Instead, they add to her own unique beauty. Today, Mariah flaunts her vitiligo and her amazing dance moves together.
Mariah is not only a beacon of positivity for people everywhere with vitiligo, she is also the perfect role model for anyone who feels like they don't belong. Remember that you are amazing! The things that set you apart only make you more unique, more awesome, and more beautiful!
