Last night, the 73rd Annual Tony Awards celebrated the best of Broadway in the past year with performances, awards (of course), and some firsts that will go down in history.
The show was opened by host James Corden with a huge number worthy of Broadway. Full of all the comedy we expect from The Late Late Show host, the opening number tackled a Broadway vs. television debate and featured everything from skits to favorite performers from some of the biggest Broadway shows of the season.
The big awards of the night, Best Play and Best Musical, went to The Ferryman and
Hadestown respectively. In fact, Hadestown went on to be the star of the night, with 14 nominations and 8 Tony Award wins. The only female director nominated for the category, Rachel Chavkin also won the Best Director of a Musical Award for Hadestown. André DeShields, also on the cast of the musical won his first Tony for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical.
While Hadestown celebrates a spectacular night of success, Ali Stroker celebrates making history as the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony Award. She won the award for best performance by a featured actress in a musical for her role in Oklahoma!.
