It seems like years have passed since everything on our social feeds was potentially cake—and actually, it was. In 2020, the “is it cake?” meme took off as talented bakers around the world jumped on a trend started by Turkish baker Tuba Geçkil whose pickle cake in particular went viral in a Buzzfeed compilation video. Any picture or video on your timeline might end up being cake whether it was shoes, non-cake foods, or even random items. Wild times.

Two years later, Netflix is bringing “is it cake?” back with a competition show. In Is It Cake?, a cast of talented bakers are going head to head to create delicious replicas of real items for a chance at a $50,000 prize. Based on the trailer it looks like a panel of judges will have to pick out the cake from groups of real items to see whose cake defies our expectations of baking the most.

For fans of Netflix’s baking show Nailed It!, this is all skill but just as much cake. We know the cakes will be good, and we all love a good guessing game, but the real question here is can Netflix really revive a two year old meme? Is It Cake? premieres on March 18, so we’ll have to wait and see what comes out of the oven.
