Since being announced earlier this year, we have been highly anticipating the release of American Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet Principal David Hallberg’s memoir A Body of Work: Dancing to the Edge and Back. The book is about Hallberg’s career as a professional dancer and seems to focus strongly on his recovery from a severe ankle injury in 2014. This injury kept him off the stage and out of the spotlight until late last year. While we mourn for Hallberg’s struggles, we also know that his story is a valuable moment of inspiration for any dancer who has been held back by injury or illness.
Since the book's release on November 7th, David Hallberg has begun a short book tour before returning to the stage for upcoming performances with the Australian Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and the Royal Ballet.
The book tour features conversations with other influential members of the dance community such as Misty Copeland, Ib Anderson, and Derek Blasberg. We can only imagine what amazing stories they will be sharing during the tour and what amazing advice they will have to offer for other dancers.
We might not be going on tour to hear all of Hallberg's wise words, but we are certainly reading and re-reading his memoir for all of the behind-the-scenes details of the life of this talented dancer and incredible performer.
