Not only is Alvin Ailey an icon for Civil Rights, but he is also a dance icon. He founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City in 1958. Ailey is also credited with popularizing modern dance as well as revolutionizing the participation of African-American dancers in dance, specifically concert dance. 

He received several awards during his lifetime for his incredible choreography, but awards also followed him posthumously. In 2014, 35 years after his death, Alvin Ailey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

Alvin Ailey is an inspiration to everyone and he a true example that nothing can stop you from doing what you love.
